Analysis: Incomplete 2020 Census Hurts All New Mexicans

CENTER FOR CIVIC POLICY News:

ALBUQUERQUE – The Center for Civic Policy today released an analysis detailing how much New Mexico stands to lose in federal funding if the state has an incomplete 2020 census count.

Examples of social programs funding at stake from undercount:

  • $4.3 billion for Medicaid
  • $693 million for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
  • $386 million for highway planning and construction
  • $194 million in special education grants
  • $144 million for school breakfast and lunches
  • $83.5 million for Head Start programs
  • $17.9 million for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program

Background:

Aug. 3, the Trump administration abandoned its previous request to have Congress extend the statutory deadlines for reporting apportionment and redistricting data from the 2020 Census.

While the House-passed HEROES Act extended these deadlines to protect the census and our democracy, the extension is missing from the Senate COVID-19 bill.

A rushed census shortchanges critical operations that count people of color, Native Americans, low-income people, and people experiencing homelessness.

This would skew Congressional representation, redistricting, and critical funding for every state in the country. Trump is trying to decide who counts and who doesn’t and we’re all collateral damage.
