ALBUQUERQUE ― American Federation of Teachers New Mexico (AFT-NM) President Stephanie Ly released the following statement:
“Words hardly express the deep disappointment educators across New Mexico feel in response to the news that Gov. Susana Martinez has chosen to appeal the recent court decision, which found New Mexico has been critically underfunding our public education system of hundreds of millions of dollars which should be flowing into classrooms and lecture halls across the state.
“This administration is woefully out of step even in its waning days, as it has been throughout the last eight years. Educator voices and stakeholders from across the spectrum have championed the Court’s recent decision, and further delaying adequate funding for our public schools only deepens the crisis of funding which exists in New Mexico. These callous actions will endure as a stain on the legacy of this administration.
“Public educators at all levels will keep students first, and continue to teach our students to the best of our ability despite this appeal, but these attempts on the part of Governor Susana Martinez and her administration to delay the full and adequate funding for our public schools truly hurts our students, their families, professional educators, and the communities we serve. We appeal to her to reconsider her actions and place New Mexico’s students ahead of her ego.”
