Ruling is a Victory for All New Mexico Educators, Parents and Students
ALBUQUERQUE – American Federation of Teachers New Mexico President Stephanie Ly released the following statement:
“Today’s ruling from Judge Thomson is a victory for all of New Mexico’s educators, parents, students, and our communities. In denying Secretary Skandera and the Public Education Department’s request to dismiss this lawsuit, an explicit acknowledgement was made that this case, in fact, brings a challenge to the PED’s evaluation system which must be heard.
“Judge Thomson made the correct assessment when he noted in his ruling that our challenge to the regulations as applied to New Mexico’s teachers can be heard on its merits.
“I want to thank the educators, parents, and students who packed the courtroom and stood in the hallways for today’s hearing in Santa Fe. It is this collective community involvement witnessed today that will help to change the narrative around New Mexico’s educators and how they are evaluated.
“Make no mistake, while we celebrate today’s victory, this battle is far from over – already, we are preparing for the PED’s appeal of this ruling. We will stay vigilant and continue to fight for every educator, every parent, and every student in New Mexico’s public schools.”
