All New Mexico Public Schools To Close for Three Weeks Starting Monday

Superintendent Kurt Steinhaus

New Mexico Public Schools will close for three weeks beginning Monday, March 16 amid growing concerns about the COVID-19 virus.

LAPS Superintendent Kurt Steinhaus spoke with Secretary of Education Ryan Stewart Thursday evening. Steinhaus confirmed the closure and told the Los Alamos Daily Post that Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham will issue a statement Friday, with further details.

“Because the LAPS Spring Break is scheduled for the week of March 23, we’ll only have to make up two weeks,” Steinhaus said.

More details about the Los Alamos school closure will be made available soon, he said.

The closure comes after the New Mexico Health Secretary issued a public health order temporarily prohibiting mass gatherings in New Mexico that brings together 100 or more people in a single room Thursday. The public health order defines mass gatherings where people gather in space like auditoriums, stadiums, arenas, conference centers and theaters.

This is an ongoing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
