Sacrifices of Past Generations of American Workers Still Matter Today
ALBUQUERQUE – American Federation of Teachers New Mexico President Stephanie Ly released the following statement:
“The American worker has fought for, and is responsible for, the end of child labor, overtime pay, an 8-hour work week, and safer working conditions, among many other rights we currently enjoy in the modern workplace.
“It is only fitting we recognize this day, as a nation, in honor of the struggle of working men and women – a struggle which is far from over. Despite Americans’ approval of unions at record highs, there is still work to be done.
“Here in New Mexico, unionized workers have worked together to defeat efforts to impose detrimental ‘right to work’ legislation, the privatization of our public schools, and the weakening of workplace rights earned over generations of struggle – these are causes which we proudly take on – for the benefit of all workers.
“We wish all of our Brothers and Sisters in the labor movement a happy Labor Day, and we will continue to fight to better the lives of all workers across New Mexico,” Ly said.
