Ruling Breaks Down Barriers For Committed Couples

ALBUQUERQUE – American Federation of Teachers New Mexico President Stephanie Ly released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s ruling on same-sex marriage:

“By writing four words, ‘It is so ordered,’ Justice Anthony Kennedy, on behalf of the majority of the Supreme Court of the United States, ushered in marriage equality for all Americans.

“Today’s ruling sends a strong message to students in New Mexico who have same-sex parents and for educators who are in same-sex relationships – in the eyes of our federal government, their families are just as valid as any other, with no exceptions.

“While same-sex couples have enjoyed the right of marriage for some time now in New Mexico, the reality of marriage equality across our nation sends a strong message to our future generations – they will never be denied the right to marry the man or woman they love.

“Today is a day for celebration across our state, and our country. AFT New Mexico congratulates each and every person who worked to make this historic day a reality, and we remember those who fought for equality who are no longer with us – your efforts were not in vain.”
