SANTA FE – The New Mexico House of Representative voted 36-33 Tuesday to pass House Joint Resolution 1 (HJR 1) the Land Grant Permanent Fund Constitutional Amendment to fund early childhood education.

Dist. 43 Rep. Stephanie Garcia Richard, one of the primary sponsors of HJR1 and acting Speaker during its passage, issued the following statement:

“The stock market may crash, oil may run out, but the investment we make in our kids will last forever. We know that educating our kids provides the highest return possible of any investment. This is the first step in giving New Mexicans the education and tools to move our state forward and as a sponsor of HJR 1, I was honored to ensure its passage as acting as Speaker during the debate.”

Rep. Stephanie Garcia Richard is the representative for House Dist. 43, which serves Los Alamos, Santa Fe, Sandoval and Rio Arriba counties. She is the Chair of the House Education Committee and is seeking election to the Office of Land Commissioner.
