Retired Educators In New Mexico Now Eligible To Return To Work Without Losing Pension Benefits

SANTA FE — New Mexico’s 48,000 retired K-12 and higher education educators now have the opportunity to return to the classroom without losing their retirement benefits thanks to a new law enacted by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham this year.

Retired teachers and college faculty receiving pension benefits from the New Mexico Educational Retirement Board can now return to teaching for an additional three years within a New Mexico public school district, college, or university without forfeiting their retirement benefits.

PED Provides $2.7M In Emergency Transportation Funds To School Districts, Charters To Offset Increased Gas Prices

SANTA FE – The Public Education Department is tapping into the Emergency Transportation Fund to allocate nearly $2.7 million to New Mexico school districts and state-chartered schools to offset the rising cost of fuel.

The cost of a gallon of gas has risen 82 cents on average since most school transportation contracts were signed last summer.

PED Releases Latest COVID Toolkit For New Mexico Schools

SANTA FE — The newest version of a digital “toolkit” to help school administrators navigate the COVID-19 pandemic allows districts and charter schools to set their own face mask policies and to accept easy, over-the-counter home tests in place of school-based testing programs.

NMPED: School-based COVID-19 Infections Drop 37 Percent Amid New Protocols Across New Mexico

  • Surveillance testing and enhanced safety practices seem to be working

SANTA FE – The New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) reports today that the number of students and staff who were infectious with COVID-19 while on a public school campus dropped 37 percent last week, possibly due to new protocols to keep schools safe for in-person learning.

For the week ending Sept. 11, 504 students and staff members were reported infectious on campus compared to 806 the previous week.

Last Friday, the LAHS boys and girls cross country teams swept the district meet. The top five boys and girls finishers were from Los Alamos. They will compete in the state tournament this Friday at Albuquerque Academy. Go Hilltoppers! Students are also participating in volleyball, football, basketball, swimming, and soccer. LAPS activities like speech and debate are being conducted virtually.

New Mexico Education Secretary Ryan Stewart announced March 8 that New Mexico schools must return to full-time in person learning by April 5.

The staff of Los Alamos Public Schools was surprised, but immediately sprang into action.

The Los Alamos School Board met in a special session March 12 to discuss reopening in person instruction on a full-time basis.

The Los Alamos School Board met for a regular meeting Tuesday, Feb. 9. President Melanie Colgan opened the meeting by recognizing Los Alamos High School (LAHS) Librarian Shannon Seitz and her student assistant, Kira Lorenc, for contributions to Black History Month.

Lorenc created a WebQuest with more than 35 reliable websites exploring topics such as the foundations of Black History Month, significant Black figures and noteworthy historical events.
