HowI Spent My Summer Vacation Exhibit Through Sept. 26
Village Arts is happy to host a new exhibition just in time for the start of the new school year! Artists were asked to take on the traditional “start of the school year” theme and be inspired by their summer adventures. The exhibit features more than 30 creations that explore a summer of colorful days, velvety nights, beaches, gardens, dreams, challenges and more! Through Sept. 26. Village Arts is at 216 DP Road, and aims to be a one stop shop for all things visual arts from learning opportunities and supplies to framing and exhibitions.Village Arts is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays, and also by appointment. Memory Care Allience Out and About at Randall Davey Audubon Center

11 a.m. to 1 p.m.1800 Upper Canyon Road Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy in the garden before we get a free tour of the Randall Davey home. Reservations appreciated, but not required. Our monthly Out and About field trips are free and open to anyone living with a dementia related illness, their caregivers, family members, past caregivers and all of our volunteers. Seed Ball Sunday
The last of three Seed Ball Sundays is 1-2:30 p.m., Aug. 21 in the Children’s Playground at the Unitarian Church of Los Alamos, 1738 N. Sage St. The public is invited to participate in this free family-oriented, multi-generational event. All supplies and seeds will be provided. The finished seed balls will be donated to the State Land Office in its on-going effort working with Forest Service to seed burned areas of New Mexico’s forests.

Program About Motorless Aviation And Ballooning In The West
Balloon Fiesta is only five weeks away, and the staff at Mesa Public Library is welcoming Dr. Gary Fogel for the occasion! 7-8 p.m. Mesa Public Library.  Fogel will give a virtual author talk about his latest book, Sky Rider: Park  Van Tassel and the Rise of Ballooning in the West. Attendees will learn the fascinating legacy of  the P.T. Barnum-like character who—in addition to co-inventing the parachute—took his concept of aerial exhibition on the road and set the stage for one of New Mexico’s most beloved  events. Free

Bears, Beers and Bites
Join PEEC and the Land of Enchantment Wildlife Foundation (LEWF)to eat like a bear! Enjoy delicious nibbles with refreshing beer and wine from Bathtub Row Brewery, plus a talk about black bears with Dr.Kathleen Ramsay. Guests will browse hors d’oeuvres from Jessica Robert, Personal Caterer, which symbolizes foods eaten by bears in the wild and in our own backyards. Each person will also receive two drink tickets for beer and/or wine from Bathtub Row Brewing Coop .6 – 8:30 p.m. Los Alamos Nature Center or Virtual. Registration is required. The Republican Party of Los Alamos (RPLA) is hosting a candidate meet and greet (very informal) 8-10 a.m. o give the community a chance to talk with state and local candidates at a personal level. Constituents can ask questions, voice concerns, and discuss hopes for the future! This event will be held at Pig & Fig Café in White Rock. Light refreshments, coffee and juice will be served.

SUMMER Farmer’s Market:
The 2022 Outdoor Farmers Market Season begins Thursday, May 5 and runs 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursdays weekly through October at the western side of Ashley Pond Park. From June to September, Saturday markets also will be available 8 a.m. noon in the same location. Locals and visitors have access to farm-fresh produce, fruits, baked goods, cheeses, meats, cider, chiles, body products, nursery products, fresh tortillas hot off the grill, breakfast items from a number of bakers, fish, honey and more Vendors interested in participating still have time to sign up. The Los Alamos Parkinson’s and Movement Disorder Support Group: Virtual meetings at 2 p.m. Wednesdays. Through the PMD Alliance (Parkinson’s and Movement Disorder Alliance), the group uses Zoom and has made it a secure site by requiring a password and using the “waiting room” function to let members in. The problem in doing it this way is that it has left out the newly diagnosed and their care partners. But anyone interested in joining, may call Allie Thompson at 505.672.9498 to be added to the membership.

Nurses With Heart: Nurses With Heart Home Care provides both personal and medical care in one’s own home. They have professional and trained caregivers who assist with bathing, grooming, light meals, light housework, companionship and transportation. Their team follows COVID-19 safety precautions and are licensed by the New Mexico Department of Health. This allows their medical staff to fulfill doctor’s orders, provide wound care, medication management and other nursing services, and assist families with case management. Ad Hoc Hiking Group: Meet downstairs at the Betty Ehart Senior Center every Thursday morning. For adults of all genders. Where do we hike? All over the place, and we usually decide the destination on the morning of, depending on participation and weather – hence the name Ad Hoc. Near by hikes of 3 to 4 miles or more on uneven ground are typical. Occasional special trips are planned and announced in advance. Always dress in layers for conditions, wear a hat, and bring water. Departure times: 8:30 a.m. May thru August; 9 a.m. September through April. Alcoholics Anonymous: (AA) is an international fellowship of men and women who have had a drinking problem. It is nonprofessional, self-supporting, multiracial, apolitical, and available almost everywhere. There are no age or education requirements. Membership is open to anyone who wants to do something about his or her drinking problem. Al-Anon Family Groups (Al-Anon): is for friends and families of alcoholics.  Members share their experience, strength, and hope in order to solve their common problems. We do this by practicing the Twelve Steps of AA ourselves, by welcoming and giving comfort to families of alcoholics, and by giving understanding and encouragement to the alcoholic. Anyone who has been affected by someone else’s drinking is welcome. Los Alamos Writers Group: meets 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. the second Wednesday of each month in Room 627, Building 6 at UNM-LA. All writers of fiction and non-fiction, published or not, are welcome. Bring a piece of writing for critique.

MISS Foundation: meets 7-9 p.m. the second Thursday of the month at Trinity on the Hill Church. It is a grief support group for parents who have lost a child at any age or gestation.  

Support Group for Family, Friends and Caregivers of Cancer Patients: 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. the second and fourth Wednesday of the month (second Wednesday group meets at White Rock Senior Center, 137 Longview Dr., 4th Wednesday group meets at Betty Ehart Senior Center, 1101 Bathtub Row in Los Alamos). This support group is free and provides a safe and loving environment in which everyone has the opportunity to share and learn. Sons of American Legion Squadron 90 Breakfast: 8 a.m. to noon every third Sunday in the restaurant in the American Legion Post 90 at 1325 Trinity Dr. Proceeds benefit American Legion charities. 

Los Alamos International Folkdance Club: Meets Tuesdays at Los Alamos Little Theatre, 1670 Nectar. First, second and third Tuesdays: 7:15-8 p.m. teaching, 8-9:30 p.m. open dance session. Fourth Tuesday (including July 25): 7:30 p.m. review of recently taught dances, followed by open dance session. Cost is $3 per session, first session FREE. Join the conversation: 10 Minutes A Week To Reimagine Education! There will be a link to a video, podcast or article sent out each week for people to watch, share and talk about. Plus, at 4 p.m. every Wednesday, a group of folks who have watched the video will host a conversation at a Coffee Klatch at Smith’s Starbucks and they hope you will join them to chat, listen, discuss and share. Educators, parents, students, community members are all invited.

Investment Group at BESC: This is an informal group that meets weekly at 10 a.m. Thursdays at the Betty Ehart Senior Center. The purpose of this group is primarily to share knowledge and information, including presentations on a broad array of investment topics. Investment strategies, stock and mutual fund tips may be discussed, as well as general discussions about the economy, except that politics is usually avoided. This group does not invest any shared funds as a group and is not an investment club in that sense. A new group that restricts its subject matter to options trading also meets at BESC but meets at 10 a.m. on the first and third Wednesdays twice a month. Russian Language Group: Russian speaking children meet and immerse in the language, kids will sing, do skits and play games in Russian. This group meets 10 a.m. to noon every other Sunday at Family Strengths Network, 3540 Orange St.

Senior Civic Issue Discussion Group: The Senior Civic Issue Discussion Group, initiated by the local AARP chapter, meets 10-11:30 a.m. the first, third and fifth Mondays of each month in the Betty Ehart Senior Center classroom. The objectives of the discussions are to better understand the important, often controversial, issues that face the community, state, nation and world and to evaluate potential solutions. The discussions are non-partisan, and topics for discussion are selected by the participants. Everyone is invited to participate. Recent issues have included the Los Alamos economy, threats to US security, income inequality, the Iranian nuclear agreement, long-term energy sources and US immigration policies. White Rock Senior Center Social Activities: The community is welcome to sing old and familiar tunes at 3 p.m. Fridays. Song sheets provided and pianist accompanies singers. The center also offers a “Gals Gab Group” at 1 p.m., Tuesdays. The social club is geared toward women who live alone and do not get to talk much to other women.
