Lauritzen: Life After 50 … Day Out

Executive Director
As we head back to school this week for the kiddos, maybe you have an adult who could use some friends, fun and fellowship, too!
Do you have to come to work on the hill, leaving a spouse or parent at home alone? Have they been surrounded by youth all summer and this week or next and things are about to get lonely? Perhaps they could use some fun, a hot breakfast or lunch prepared by a chef and something to hold their attention.
The Los Alamos Retired and Senior Organization (LARSO) runs two centers, one in Los Alamos and one in White Rock. These centers are active hangouts for anyone over 50. I have heard people say they are only in their 70’s and do not attend the center.
I ask why not, we have so much fun at both places. Perhaps, you just need to know more.
The focus today is on the Adult Day Services program at the Betty Ehart Center in Los Alamos. Laurie Hochhalter and her band of do gooders welcome adults everyday into their inner sanctum to visit, read, do puzzles, exercise, listen to music, eat, nap or whatever floats your boat. Why be home alone, when there are people glad to see you each day? If you like arts and crafts, movies, gardening or bingo, we have it 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day.
We are planning special events for National Fall Prevention Week, Sept. 23-27. You can come anytime and try out canes, walkers or rollators. A rollator is like a walker on wheels and some even have a built in chair.
If you think you have a family member in need of one, come borrow ours for FREE! Do you have someone visiting our community for a brief time and need additional equipment? Maybe we have just what you would like to borrow.
We loan items like crutches and shower chairs. Our Adult Day Services program has many items, often called durable medical equipment, at no cost to you. We just ask for your phone number and that you bring it back when you are done. If you feel like joining the senior center, that would be an added bonus for us. How can we help you? Just let us know.
The center is open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and our Adult Day program is here for you from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. General questions can be directed to 505.662.8920 and Laurie is available to answer many questions by phone or email. She is available at 505.661-0081 or You can also request a brochure or newsletter from Next week, what more can you do?
