ScienceFest  News:

The community is welcome to attend ScienceFest fun, all weekend long, as Discovery Day kicks off 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

You may have seen some fun promotional tickets, but organizers want to make sure everyone knows that the large event in Los Alamos downtown area is free, no ticket needed! A small number of activities require fees or pre-registration to participate. You can see the entire list at www.losalamossciencefestival.com/events.

This weekend includes a variety of food vendors, inflatables, photo booths, and an abundance of organizations ready to provide hands-on fun for children and children at heart. Some of the participants include; The National Museum of Nuclear Science and History, The Santa Fe Children’s Museum, Explora, Los Alamos Makers, Timmy Telescope, The New Mexico Consortium, The American Chemical Society, and more.

Have you ever experienced an Astrophysics Ballet? You can on Saturday! The Los Alamos Creative District and DanceWorx will host a beautiful interpretation of modern dance based on exploration of theoretical astrophysics, inspired though collaboration with Astrophysicist Nicole Marie Lloyd-Ronning of LANL and Choreographer Amber Vasquez of Academy of Performing Arts/Taos Youth Ballet. This will take place on the Ashley Pond Stage at 11am.

UNM-LA will have tours 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. of EMS lab and ceramics lab. Come explore the inner workings of an ambulance, delve into the details of Emergency Medical Services, and learn about various types of clay and why they are used in specific types of pottery. The new TIME (Temporary Installments Made for the Environment) project is also currently showcased at UNM-LA. These will be on display through the end of August, but ScienceFest offers a great time to go check them out.

A Drone Zone competition will be held 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the Fuller Lodge Lawn, and if you want to participate, check out the website for registration details.

How about visiting the PBS Science Café, at the Los Alamos Nature Center? PEEC welcomes you to join Dr. Galen Gisler to dig into two cosmic mysteries, during a special PBS screening of NOVA Wonders: What’s the Universe Made Of? The fun starts at 2 p.m.

The Chalk Walk will be happening again this year, on the Fuller Lodge sidewalk. Anyone over 50 is welcome to come sit and share stories under the Los Alamos Retired and Senior Organization (LARSO) tent on the pond, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Stay for a few minutes or all day and the stories are free.

Dig out your favorite lab coat and dust off your favorite Erlenmeyer flask, dress as your favorite historical science expert, or get creative and find a new way to show off your inner nerd for our annual Scientist Look-alike Contest. This will take place at 1 p.m. on the Ashley Pond Stage.

Then stick around for Lyrics & Libations with music from local bands Auto Electric and Resonance. The beer garden will feature Bathtub Row Brewing Co-op and Honeymoon Brewery serving up adult beverages and discussing The Science of Beer/Kombucha.

Sunday, one of the ScienceFest Community Partners, Tibbar Plasma Technologies, will host laboratory tours from 2-4 pm, at 274 DP Road. “They recently received a prestigious grant to develop a plasma heat engine for efficient production of fusion energy and are going to be making plasma that day,” Kate Cleveland said. “If you’ve never seen them in action, I highly encourage you to go check it out!”

The final ScienceFest event takes place Sunday evening, at Bathtub Row Brewing Co-op, a ScienceFest Community Partner. They plan to have an outdoor screening of Apollo 13, as a segue from ScienceFest fun to 50th anniversary of the moon landing. It’s one fun way to honor this semi-centennial event. So, come enjoy a pint of their new Eureka! S.M.A.S.H (single malt and single hop) IPA. The recipe was brewed especially for ScienceFest and contains Eureka hops. A great way to round out all the fun of our town’s signature event –  enjoy this classic movie with friends and family.
