K OF C News:
The Knights of Columbus State free throw contest was held Saturday, March 17 at Bernalillo High School Gymnasium.
Over 70 boys and girls ages 9-14 from around the state participated in this annual event including district champions from Northern New Mexico among them were three contestants representing the Los Alamos Sacred Heart council #3137. This year’s state free throws championships were very competitive as spectators witnessed many of the contests decided by once basket (25 total free throws for each contestant).
All three local competitors representing the Los Alamos council performed very well as all three were crowned state champions. Lukas Ulibarri won his second consecutive state championship as he narrowly beat his competitor 22-21 in the 11-year-old division while Abraham Sanchez brought home the 12-year-old state championship trophy. Ryan Aldaz, the third and final Los Alamos representative, was crowned the 13-year-old champion.
Other Northern New Mexico district free throw champions who brought home trophies included Elizario Rivera finished 2nd and Deondro Lopez won the state championship.
The Knights of Columbus Sacred Heart Council would like to congratulate Lukas, Abraham and Ryan for their great performances at both district and state competitions—we are very proud of you.
Also, we would like to thank all boys and girls who participated in this year’s local competition and we encourage all eligible kids to consider participating in future Knights of Columbus free throw competitions. Our local council has seen at least one state champion crowned in eight of the last nine years and this year was extremely special as all three local council competitors won the state championship.
