The Los Alamos Federated Republican Women will host a special event at nnon Thursday, Oct. 8 in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Special guest speaker, Bernadette Martinez, will present “Hidden Heritage of New Mexico: Then and Now – The 400 Year Old Secret.” This documentary, produced by Martinez, sends a life-saving message to its viewers by revealing the genetic danger posed to Hispanic women in Northern New Mexico by the BRCA1 gene.
The BRCA1 gene, which commonly causes breast and gynecologic cancers, appears in unusually high concentration in Hispanic communities and has been linked to the ancestral relationships between contemporary Hispanic families and the crypto-Jews who settled in Northern New Mexico in the 16th century.
This event will be in the main auditorium at the Los Alamos Church of Christ, 2323 Diamond Dr. All are welcome. Suggested donation is $10 per guest. All proceeds will be donated to the Gynecological Cancer Awareness Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering women in New Mexico who are fighting gynecological cancer by providing education and support and helping them live a healthy and inspired life.
