SANTA FE – The New Mexico Tourism Department is partnering with Avila Retail to bring attention to products that are 100 percent made and manufactured in New Mexico.

These products, all members of the department’s New Mexico True Certified program (NMTC), are featured in three outlets at the Albuquerque International Sunport owned by Avila Retail - Greetings from New Mexico, Earth Spirit and the ABQ2GO kiosk.

Alex Kirk of Los Alamos has signed with Anadolu Efes Sports Club, a Turkish professional basketball team based in Istanbul, Turkey. He'll be with the team Thursday in Barcelona, Spain.

Anadolu Efes is the most successful club in the history of the Turkish Basketball Super League, having won the league's championship 13 times.

The home of Anadolu Efes S.K. is the Abdi İpekçi Arena in Istanbul, which has a seating capacity of 12,270 people for basketball games. The club has its own practice facility built in 1982 in the district of Bahçelievler.

Walk-in registration for youth and high school lacrosse teams is 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17 in the multipurpose room of the White Rock Branch Library, 10 Sherwood Blvd.

Students age 9 through high school seniors are welcome. Although there is currently not a separate girls’ program, girls are welcome to play in a coed environment.

The Los Alamos High School boys basketball team picked up two big victories last week that should help them when it’s time for the seedings for the Class 5A state basketball tournament. The Hilltoppers beat Class 5A rival Belen High School 52-49 Jan. 6 at Belen, avenging an earlier 44-33 loss to the Eagles Dec. 28 at the Poe Corn tournament in Roswell. One day later, Jan. 7, Los Alamos beat Class 6A Santa Fe High School 55-53 in overtime.

“Those were two great wins for us,” Los Alamos Coach Michael Kluk said.

Kaitlin Bennett lead the Hilltoppers at the Lubbock Swim Invitational Jan. 6-7.

Bennett captured first place in the 50 free (24.79) and the 100 free (54.04), she also helped on the girls medley relay team and the 200 freestyle quartet.

Tickets go on sale today for the Backcountry Film Festival, made possible by the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) and the Reel Deal Theater. Produced by the Boise-based nonprofit Winter Wildlands Alliance, the touring Backcountry Film Festival will make its way to more than 100 locations around the world. The screening at the Reel Deal at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26 will be the only one in New Mexico.

LAHS Senior Kaitlin Bennett Leads Hilltoppers At Lubbock Swim Invitational

LAHS Senior Kaitlin Bennett takes first in the 50 free and 100 free.


The Los Alamos High School Hilltoppers Swimming and Diving teams competed Jan. 6-7 at the Lubbock High School Swimming and Diving Invitational at the Pete Ragus Aquatic Center in Lubbock, Texas.  

The invitational was a very competitive high school meet, drawing 500 swimmers and divers from across Texas, with teams from greater Dallas, Midland and El Paso.

The Hilltoppers finished 8th among 20 teams in the girls and 11th among 21 teams in the boys.

SKI News:

Young skiers, ages 7 to 18 years old, are invited to join the Los Alamos Ski Racing Club. Training is conducted by licensed and trained coaches.

The 10-Day Program is committed to improving the athletes’ skiing while having fun. At the same time, athletes are exposed to competitive Alpine Ski Racing.

The 20-Day Program is dedicated to developing competitive Alpine Ski Racers.

The Los Alamos Rams played the El Paso Coronado Thunderbirds in a two game series Saturday at the Los Alamos County Ice rink. 

The first game was played at 9 a.m. and the second game at 7 a.m.

In a game that the Los Alamos High School boys basketball team needed to win, the Hilltoppers took care of business and defeated Pojoaque Valley High School 56-50 Jan. 3 at Pojoaque to even their record at 6-6 for the season.

“This is a tough place to come into and win,” LAHS Coach Mike Kluk said. “It was pretty much a must win for us.

Winter has set in with full force in southern Colorado, opening the way for snow adventures of many kinds.
Over the upcoming MLK weekend, the Los Alamos Mountaineers will head north to take advantage of the snow, now five feet deep at Monarch Pass. They will make their base in the small town of Salida, and spend their days doing winter sports in the Monarch Pass area.

The Los Alamos Hockey Association (LAHA) is hosting the Holiday Ice Hockey Festival Dec. 27-30 at the Los Alamos County Ice Rink.

Geared for younger players, the annual event brings in teams from Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Taos, Austin, Texas and Odessa, Texas.

The line-up includes the Mites playing Dec. 27-28, Peewees Dec.

The Backcountry Film Festival is returning to the Reel Deal Theater in Los Alamos for the sixth year in a row.

Produced by the Boise, Idaho based nonprofit Winter Wildlands Alliance, the touring Backcountry Film Festival will make its way to more than 100 locations around the world.

Second Annual Red River Skijoring Races Jan. 14-15

RED RIVER The 2nd Annual Red River Skijoring races in Red River, NM are Saturday, Jan. 14 and Sunday, Jan. 15.

The races start each day at high noon on River Street. This year there also will be an Exhibition Division in which kids and adults can participate.

In skijoring, a skier hangs on to a rope attached to a horse and glides across the snow. It is like horse-drawn waterskiing on snow. Best of all Skijoring is a thrilling spectator sport. With speeds of up to 37 mph, the action is fast-paced and exciting.

High Flyers Gymnastics had a successful launch of its 2017 competitive season, taking home five gold medals at the Zia Winter Fiesta Dec. 3 in Santa Fe.
Siena Rolfe placed first all-around in the Level 4 middle age division with a 35.0, beating out her nearest competitor by .45. In the same age division, Emily Smith placed first on balance beam with a score of 9.05.

A tough week for Hilltoppers’ hoops, Los Alamos wrestlers take third at Panther Classic

It was a tough week for both Los Alamos High School basketball teams. The boys lost two games and their season record fell to 4-4 on the season. The Lady Hilltoppers extended their losing streak to eight games, falling to 3-10 on the season.

The Hilltoppers lost to Albuquerque’s St. Pius X High School 50-38 Dec. 15 at Los Alamos. The Hilltoppers trailed 27-13 at halftime. Los Alamos outscored the Sartans 25-23 in the second half.


Aquatomics Seeks Fond Memories Of Bill Hudson

Los Alamos Aquatomics will be hosting the second annual Bill Hudson Memorial Open Jan.  28-29. 
Many Los Alamos residents have fond memories of Hudson as a respected icon who left a rich legacy for the community to continue.
In his farewell letter to the community Aug. 9, Hudson said:
“When the swimming pool opened in 1951, I was offered the job of managing the pool and scheduling its use. First, I started swimming lessons … From these programs came my first competitive team, consisting of three students, two boys and one girl.

Council Oks List Of Rec Projects For Bond Election

The Los Alamos County Council this evening voted 5-2 to approve a list of recreation projects and directed staff to develop a ballot question in the amount of $20 million for a May 2017 all mail ballot. The list includes Ice Rink improvements, Softball Field improvements at Overlook Park, a new Recreation Center with Ice Rink, a new Multi-generational pool and a Splash Pad at Pinon Park in White Rock. Council also voted to direct staff to develop a plan for advertising and promoting the bond. Councilors David Izraelevitz and Steven Girrens voted against the measure. Photo by Carol A.

True Tennis Players Even In 20 Degree Weather!

If there is any question about the seriousness of tennis in Los Alamos, just see that four local players, Bob Nolen, Richard Henderson, John Gregory and Merete Nieto, played Monday morning in 20 degree weather at Pinon Courts in White Rock.

There are about 25 retired adults who play three times a week. They alternate between Los Alamos and White Rock.

Los Alamos County Council To Review Final Report On Eight Proposed Capital Improvement Projects Tuesday

The Dekker Perich Sabatini (DPS) team, the group contracted to scope, develop concepts and put together cost estimates for the County’s proposed recreation projects, will give its final presentation at the Los Alamos County Council Tuesday, Dec. 20 meeting.
The DPS team will give detailed opinions of probable costs as well as projected operations and maintenance costs for the eight proposed recreation projects.
