A Mountaineer’s Story: Big Wall Climbing

PEEC News:

Community members and especially stone monkeys are invited to the Los Alamos Mountaineers meeting Tuesday, Aug. 22 to hear from adventurer Forest Altherr about his rock climbing experiences in Yosemite.

The presentation begins at 7:15 p.m. at the Los Alamos Nature Center. The Los Alamos Mountaineers meeting starts at 7 p.m. and cover information about upcoming outings.

Altherr has been exploring the cracks, crevaces and faces of Yosemite's largest granite slabs

David Kratzer is the best predictor in the Atomic City Road Runner weekly pace race Tuesday in Quemazon recording 4 seconds off his predicted time.

Other accurate predictors include:
  • Kris Tuggle with a 25 second difference;
  • Heather Hughes at 30 seconds off;
  • Tamara Jurado with a 46 second differential; and
  • Tad Hughes at 79 seconds off.
 
Leyton Stuhan, 11, was the first finisher in the 1 mile run at 10:49 and Mariela Saenz was the best female with a time of 11:49.

LAHS Homecoming Parade Sept. 29

The Los Alamos High School Homecoming Parade is 2:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29.

Staging begins at 1:30 p.m. at Central Avenue and 4th Street (Canyon Complex).  The parade route will travel west on Central Avenue merging onto Canyon Road.

These roads and other access roads will be closed during the parade.

LAHS Announces Hall Of Fame Inductees

Los Alamos High School has announced the 2017 Hall of Fame class to be inducted at the conclusion of Homecoming week.

Inductees will join in on the pep rally and Parade Friday, Sept. 29 and be introduced at halftime of the football game against the Santa Fe High School Demons. An induction banquet will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 1. Tickets are available at the LAHS Athletics office for $25 each. This event is open to the public.

Last week several Los Alamos athletes competed in the 2017 Western Zone Championship Swim Meet in Roseville, Calif. Andy Corliss, Duncan Henderson, Orion Henderson, Carson Hicks, Savannah Kimball, Ming Lo, Konstantine Nelson and Sophia Pieck were eight of the 57 swimmers representing the New Mexico Zone Team.

LAPS News:

Even though school does not start until Thursday Aug. 17, Los Alamos secondary students are already busy with athletics and activities. This is after a summer filled with camps and clinics. 

The football team and band have completed two full weeks of grueling practice. The ROTC students and Solar Eclipse team are in full production mode.

Weekly Fishing Report: Aug. 8

It seems like that with a few exceptions, the fishing has hit the summer doldrums at many of the lakes in Northern New Mexico. Slow-to-fair fishing has been reported from popular destinations like Fenton Lake in the Jemez Mountains, Hopewell Lake near Tres Piedras, Morphy Lake near Las Vegas and Eagle Nest Lake.

All of these lakes experience heavy weed growth in the summer and that makes the popular technique of fishing on the bottom with Power Bait or salmon eggs difficult.

Registration Open: YMCA’s Developmental Co-ed Youth Soccer ... Players, Coaches, Team Parents Needed

Registration is open for The Family YMCA’s Developmental Co-ed Youth Soccer Program.

Practices and games are Aug. 29 to Oct. 6, two times per week in Los Alamos or White Rock.

Volunteer coaches and team parents are needed. The teams are kept small (6-8 players) so all kids get plenty of skills practice and play time. Price includes team jersey for players to keep.

Weather permitting at 6:30 p.m. today at Urban Park, Los Alamos Tennis Club (LATC) will be hosting it’s A division singles final which got rained out last Sunday. 
 
Two singles players participating in finals are current tennis teaching pros (Aaron Skinner/David Rutherford) and will be playing at a level the Los Alamos Community doesn’t get to see often. Mr Skinner is a former Division III collegiate singles champion and Mr. Rutherford runs a tennis club in New Zealand and during the winter in New Zealand is a teaching pro at Shellaberger Tennis Club out of Santa Fe.

The Los Alamos Triathlon was held this past weekend with biking, swimming and running events to challenge the 130 participants.

The Los Alamos Triathlon is a sprint triathlon with a unique format of bike, swim and run and is held at a starting elevation of 7,400 feet.

Jason Norman came back from a sizeable deficit in the second round of the Los Alamos City Championship golf tournament to win the men’s title for 2017.
 
Norman shot a 3-under 69 in Sunday’s second day of competition, while first day leader Tim Johnson couldn’t keep up his furious pace from Saturday.

Savanna Strother, 9, is the best predictor in the weekly pace race Tuesday in Walnut Canyon on North Mesa with a 15 second difference off her predicted time.

Other accurate predictors are:

  • Ted Romero at 19 seconds off;
  • Mark Bjorkund with a 20 second differential;
  • Anna Teterovskaya recording 23 seconds off; and
  • Pavel Trudolyubov with a 29 second difference.
 
On the 1 mile course 11-year-old Leyton Stuhah was the best finisher at 7:09 and Becky Chamberlin was the top female with a time of 8:39.

The Monsoon season is in full swing. Afternoon and evening rainstorms are to be expected this time of year. One of the benefits that we are seeing this year is good streamflows in the smaller tributaries of the major rivers like the Rio Grande and the Chama River.

The small streams originating in the Sangre de Cristos Mountains that flow into the Rio Grande are all running above normal for this time of year.

LAHS Boys And Girls Golf Team Tryouts Aug. 7-8

The Los Alamos High School Golf Team is holding tryouts for the 2017-2018 squad. Boys and girls grades 8-12 interested in the program are encouraged to tryout.

Tryout Information:

  • Dates: Aug. 7-8
  • Time: 3 p.m. each day
  • Location: Los Alamos Golf Course

As a reminder, no player will be able to participate without first submitting an athletic physical to LAHS Athletics and completing InfoSnap online. Physicals are to be submitted at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, in the LAHS Auxiliary Gym.
