Double Arch: Double Arch in Arches National Park is unique in that two arches formed using the same stone as its foundation. Fr. Glenn: True Paternity

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

Happy Fathers’ Day to all of you dads out there. What a blessing you have in your children whom you have had the privilege to “co-create” with their moms and with God Himself, parents and child becoming a sort of domestic trinity in yourselves, made in your, mom’s and God’s own image. But, of course, fatherhood entails much more than just physical procreation; true fatherhood is being example, protector, provider, teacher, a just and calm disciplinarian when necessary, and even model for your children. A father is not so much the one who simply shares genetic material with his Read More

Cinema Cindy Reviews: ‘Elemental’ Now Showing At SALA

Review by CYNTHIA BIDDLECOMB
Los Alamos

“Elemental” is an animated story that takes place in a city where Water, Air, Earth and Fire all live. The Fire-landers appear to be the most recent immigrants, living in their own section of the city. For reasons of their flammability, they are often not welcome in enclosed public spaces.

The film opens with an immigrant couple from Fireland who arrive and go through immigration. Their language, “Fire-ish”, is not understood, so an agent writes their names as Burnie and Cinder. They start looking to rent a house but are repeatedly turned away. They find Read More

I recently led a memorial service for a teenager who died due to a fentanyl overdose. During the service, a relative expressed heartfelt concern for our community, saying, “This is such a beautiful place–this shouldn’t be happening here!”

I completely agree that the death of a young person by drug overdose should not be happening. I question the idea, however, that “here” is somehow Read More

Kiwanis has been active in Los Alamos for 75 years.

The Kiwanis Motto is “Serving the Children of the World”. That motto replaced one that was in effect for 80 years at the international level: We Build.

Kiwanis builds by serving the children of the world. A strong pillar of Kiwanis is the concept of Kiwanis Family—offering “clubs” at every school level here in Los Alamos.

The elementary schools have “K Kids”. In general, these are for Read More

An Open Book: June 21st Will Always Be My Father’s Day

By DAVID IZRAELEVITZ
Los Alamos

Dear Readers:

Father’s Day is personally anticlimactic now; I now have children who are themselves fathers, and it is they who deserve recognition for chasing after toddlers. After all, being the father of thirty-year-olds is now much less physically or mentally demanding than it was thirty years ago. However, thirty years is not long enough to have forgotten the joys and trials of raising small children, so I want to honor them and their partners as they engage in the hardest job they will ever love.

I hope you will enjoy this column originally published in 2015, Read More

This Sunday, like millions of Americans, I will celebrate Father’s Day.

I will cherish the memory of my adoptive father’s life and the impact his love had on my wellbeing.

His active engagement in my life positively influenced my social development, helped me achieve academically and steered my moral growth from childhood into adulthood.

I was blessed when my adoptive parents rescued me from a Catholic orphanage for special needs children six months after I was born with a hole in my heart. It was a dangerous physical ailment that had Read More
