Special Saturday Clinic On Veterans Property Tax Exemptions March 16 At American Legion In Los Alamos

In response to the needs of working veterans, the New Mexico Department of Veterans Services and Los Alamos County Assessor’s office are hosting a special Saturday clinic.
Military veterans and unmarried widows of veterans are encouraged to drop in anytime between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., Saturday, March 16 at the American Legion Post 90, 1325 Trinity Drive in Los Alamos.

New Mexico Arts Hosts Instagram Live Artist Talk With Marcus Xavier Chormicle

New Mexico Arts will be hosting an Instagram Live artist talk with NMA 2024 Artist-in-Residence Marcus Xavier Chormicle (Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians/Chicano), a Las Cruces-based multidisciplinary photographer who has been in residence at Lincoln Historic Site in Lincoln, N.M. since late February.

NM Corrections Dept. Celebrates Graduation Of 11 Inmates

LOS LUNAS — The New Mexico Corrections Department (NMCD) announces the graduation of nine adult education graduates and two associate degree graduates at the Central New Mexico Correctional Facility (CNMCF).
The two associate degrees were received from Mesalands Community College and the International Christian College and Seminary.
NMCD’s Reentry Division projects the final FY24 graduation totals will exceed those of FY23, where the department proudly had the highest number of High School Equivalency (HSE) completers of any adult education program in the state.

In 2023, the Legislature passed HB 130, a bipartisan bill signed by Gov. Lujan Grisham to extend classroom time for New Mexico students. The idea of enforcing 5-day school weeks was considered during discussions yet rejected.

Youth Art Month has been celebrated in March at schools all around the country since 1961. In honor of youth art education, Los Alamos Public Schools (LAPS) student artwork will be on display March 14 through April 8 in Step Up Gallery at Mesa Public Library.

The Toppers hosted the Valencia Jaguars of Los Lunas on Thursday afternoon at Hope Field in White Rock. The game was all Toppers winning 17-1. The game was shortened to 3 innings by the mercy rule. The Los Alamos Historical Society’s March Lecture Series will feature former LANL scientist Dr. Glen McDuff, who will speak on Project Alberta and the delivery of the first nuclear weapons.
Dr. McDuff has a PhD in Physics from the University of St. Andrews and a degree in electrical engineering from Texas Tech University, where he was also a professor. Dr. McDuff is retired from LANL, but continues to serve as a consultant to the Weapons Division and to the Defense Threat Reduction Agency’s Nuclear Weapons School at Kirtland Air Force Base.

New Mexico Public Education Department Adopts 180-Day Calendar Rule With Revisions Based On Public Feedback

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) is moving forward with plans to ensure that all schools in the state operate on a minimum of 180 instructional days beginning with the 2024-2025 school year.
Revisions reflect feedback received during the public comment period that best supports students, families, educators, and communities.
The final rule will include:
- Four-day school week calendars. The revisions to the proposed rule allow for four-day school week calendars.
- Exemptions for early college high schools. Early college high schools will be exempt

SANTA FE — Santa Fe Community College (SFCC) will close from March 25 through April 1 for Spring Break and Spring Holiday.
