Catch Of The Week: COVID-19 Relief Text Scams

This week the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), state tax agencies, and the tax industry warned consumers of a new text scam targeting taxpayers.

The scam attempts to trick people into giving away their bank account information via text messages appearing to be from the IRS or state/relief agencies regarding the $1,200 Economic Impact Payments (EIP).

As a reminder – neither the IRS nor state agencies will ever text taxpayers requesting bank account information for an EIP deposit to be made.

New Mexico COVID-19 Update: 1,287 New Cases, Total Now 52,394 With 23 New Deaths, 22,811 Patients Recovered

STATE News:

SANTA FE – New Mexico state health officials have announced this afternoon the partial total of 1,287 additional positive tests for COVID-19.

Los Alamos County reports 2 more cases today bringing the total to 62 cases that have tested positive for COVID-19.

Today’s update includes 6 new deaths in New Mexico related to COVID-19.

The New Mexico Department of Health reported today the most recent cases:

  • 342 new cases in Bernalillo County
  • 38 new cases in Chaves County
  • 10 new cases in Cibola County
  • 3 new cases in Colfax County
  • 51 new cases in Curry County

New Mexico Supreme Court Issues Affirmative Opinion On State’s Authority To Enforce Public Health Orders

NM Supreme News:

SANTA FE – The Legislature has authorized state officials to impose civil administrative penalties to enforce public health emergency orders restricting business operations, the New Mexico Supreme Court concluded in an opinion issued Thursday.

The Court’s unanimous written opinion provides the detailed legal reasoning for an oral decision issued from the bench in August following a hearing in which attorneys presented arguments to the justices.

County: Applications Now Open For Childcare And Virtual Learning Assistance Under CARES Funding

COUNTY News:

Los Alamos County has opened the application period for individuals to apply for Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) funding for childcare assistance and/or virtual learning assistance.

Individuals impacted by COVID-19 since March 1, 2020 who reside in Los Alamos County and meet income qualifications are encouraged to apply.
