LAHS Finishes 2nd at Wrestling Invitational

On Saturday, Jan. 12, the Los Alamos High School wrestling team finished in second place behind 5A Eldorado at the Academy High School Wrestling Invitational.


Teams participating in Saturday's invitational included Albuquerque Academy High, Albuquerque High, Bernalillo, Eldorado, Grants, La Cueva, LAHS, Rio Grande and West Mesa.


Placing in their weight classes were:

  • Cory Geyer 1st;
  • Brian Geyer 1st;
  • Arnoldo Ortiz 1st in his second overtime match;
  • Chandler Lauritzen 2nd;
  • Lane Saunders 2nd;
  • Peter Brewer 4th; and
  • Diego Madrid 4th.

Local athlete Lisa Dougherty is a Ph.D. materials scientist, Project Management Professional and Certified Quality Engineer working full-time as an engineer at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL.)

In November, she qualified to participate in the 3,000 mile non-stop Race Across AMerica - RAAM. She will start in Oceanside, Calif.,

Spaghetti For Everyone 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday!

The community is invited to attend the Los Alamos High School Swim Team's Annual Fundraising Spaghetti Dinner.

The dinner is 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11 at the Trinity on the Hill Episcopal Church.

Tickets are $5 a person - children 8 & under are $3/plate. The dinner includes spaghetti (both a meat sauce and a non-meat sauce will be available), salad, garlic bread, dessert and a drink.

Tickets can be purchased in advance from any high school swimmer or at the door.


YMCA Offering Endurance Training for Cyclists

Are you looking for some training guidance for an upcoming cycling event or do you just want to work on your own cycling endurance?   

The Family YMCA is offering an Endurance Training for Cyclists Class. Each class will have a 2-hour riding component and a 1/2 hour of core conditioning. 

In addition, the following topics will be discussed: 

  • Proper bike fit;
  • Clothing and equipment;
  • Nutrition and hydration,
  • Aches and pains-preventing them and what to do if you have them;
  • Weekly training recommendations; and
  • How to design your own training plan.

Turf Covers Meant to Protect Against Winter's Wrath

If you drive by the golf course on a regular basis you may have noticed that a number of the golf course’s greens were covered prior to the first snows of the season. 

These turf covers are meant to protect the golf greens from the wrath that winter conditions can sometimes bring. The covers provide protection from both Crown Hydration and Desiccation.    

Crown Hydration typically occurs during a day or two of daytime warm up causing the melting of snow or the water from rainfall to rapidly refreeze during cold night temperatures.
