Heron Lake Paddle Festival is Aug. 10-12

The Heron Lake Paddle Festival is set for Aug. 10, 11 and 12. Heron Lake State Park is 11 miles west of Tierra Amarilla via U.S. highways 64 and 84 and N.M. 95.

This three day event includes canoe and kayak clinics, demos and races among other activities such as a used gear sale.

The Paddle Festival site is in the Ridge Rock area of Heron Lake State Park - just west of the dam.

Leonard is Top Predictor in Weekly Pace Race

Erik Leonard was the fastest for the 1-mile predict-your-time pace race in 8:14 and was only one second off his prediction.

A total of 41 people did the weekly Tuesday pace races, which were held on paved roads in Pajarito Acres under cloudy skies.

For the one mile course, the fastest female runner was Michelle Jones (9:39). The best female predictors were Inez Ross (10 s off her prediction), Darby Kellum and D J Kliesen (both 13 s). Zach Leonard did the 1 mile run in 8:16, and Morgan Jones did 10:47.

Max Schulze is 2012 World Champion Unicyclist

Los Alamos unicyclist Max Schulze has returned home from the Unicycle World Championships held last month in Italy, as an undisputed World Champion.

"The highlights from the competition for me are that mostly the entire event is a great experience," Schulze said. "Getting to see friends from across the world who share the common passion of unicycling is amazing. It is like we are all a gigantic family for two weeks every two years at UNICON.

Fall KinderKick Soccer Registration Ends Aug. 17

Registration is open until Aug. 17 for the YMCA Fall KinderKick Soccer program for ages three to four and five to six.

The Season runs Aug. 27 to Oct. 4. Practice and games are twice a week for six weeks in White Rock and Los Alamos.

Volunteer Coaches, Asst. Coaches and Team Parents are needed. Price is $45 for Y Members and $60 for Program Only Members and includes a high quality soccer jersey.

Vargas is Top Predictor in Weekly Pace Race

Lisabeth Alfaro Vargas was the top predictor in the weekly pace race at 6 seconds off her predicted time. 
 
The run started at Fireman Park at the junction of 45th Street and Arizona Avenue and ran through the Western Area including the Perimeter Trail.
 
Other top predictors were Bob Westervelt with a 18 second differential, Katie Gattiker recording 51 seconds off and Ted Romero 67 seconds off his estimate.
 
On the one mile course Daniel Romero was the first male at 5:27 and Isolina Viloma was the top female with a time of 9:04.
