PEARLE LOIS THOMSEN Feb. 12, 1920-Oct. 12, 2013

Pearle Lois Thomsen died peacefully on October 12, 2013. She was born on February 12, 1920 and grew up during the Great Depression in Galesburg, Illinois.

She attended nursing school and worked as a nurse anesthetist. Her first husband, Johnny Maxwell, was killed in the South Pacific in World War II. She married John Thomsen in 1945 and lived in Seattle, Denver, Cleveland, and Peoria, Illinois; she lived much of her adult life in Des Moines, Iowa. 

She was preceded in death by her parents Arthur and Margaret Johnson; her husbands, Johnny

NELSON MANDELA July 18, 1918–Dec. 5, 2013

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born July 18, 1918 in Mvezo, South Africa. He died today in Johannesburg, South Africa after months of fighting a lung infection.

Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary and politician who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999.

He is survived by his wife Graça Machel and seven children.

President Obama delivered a statement on the passing of Mandela, calling him "a man who took history in his hands, and bent the arc of the moral universe toward justice."

STIRLING COLGATE Dec. 1, 2013

Los Alamos National Laboratory Senior Fellow and longtime Laboratory scientist Stirling Colgate of the Nuclear and Particle Physics, Astrophysics and Cosmology Group died Sunday (Dec. 1) at his home in White Rock. A co-founder of the Santa Fe Institute, Colgate, 88, also was president of the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology in Socorro from 1965 to 1974 and a professor emeritus of physics at the school.

A gathering, "Remembering Stirling," open to colleagues and friends is scheduled for 5:45 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 15, at Fuller Lodge.

DIMITRI MIHALAS March 20, 1939–Nov. 21, 2013

World-renowned astrophysicist Dimitri Mihalas passed away in his sleep at his home on November 21, 2013 in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Dr. Mihalas retired from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1999 and from the Los Alamos National Laboratory in 2011. Dimitri, to his friends and family, has donated his body to the University of New Mexico Medical School and his library to New Mexico Tech.

Dimitri was born on March 20, 1939 in Los Angeles, California where he grew up. He received his B.

JAMES WHITNEY GODBOLT, SR. Oct. 21, 1922–Oct. 17, 2013

James Whitney Godbolt, Sr. died in Loveland, Colo. on Oct. 17, 2013, four days before his 91st birthday. Jim was born on Oct. 21, 1922 in Red Bluff, Calif., the son of Dr. Fred B. and Martha (Tinker) Godbolt. He spent a good part of his youth hunting, fishing, swimming and boating with his mother and father on the Sacramento River and in the Sierra Nevada Mountains near Lassen Volcanic National Park.
