New Mexico Gets $43.7 Million For Orphan Well Clean-Up
STATE News:
SANTA FE — Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and members of the Congressional delegation announced Monday that the U.S. Department of the Interior has made $43.7 million available to the state to clean up abandoned oil and gas wells in New Mexico through the federal Infrastructure and Jobs Act.
When an oil and gas operator goes bankrupt, wells may become “orphaned” and the responsibility to plug and reclaim the site may fall to the state. Wells and associated facilities that are left abandoned can cause environmental damage by leaking methane or impacting groundwater.

DOE/NNSA: Comment Period For West Road Floodplain Assessment, Cable Fencing For TA-03 In Los Alamos Canyon
DOE/NNSA News:
The Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration’s (DOE/NNSA) Los Alamos Field Office has issued a Floodplain Assessment for the West Road Post and Cable Fencing Project at Technical Area 03 (Floodplain Assessment) for a 15-day public review and comment period commencing with publication of this notice.
The comment period will end Feb. 14.
DOE/NNSA is proposing to install post and cable or in-kind barriers along West Road at selected locations near the Los Alamos County Ice Rink in Los Alamos Canyon at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).

New Mexico Environment Department Reaches Settlement With MCT Industries Regarding Hazardous Waste Storage
NMED News:
SANTA FE —The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) announced Monday that is has has reached settlement with MCT Industries (MCT) concerning hazardous waste storage practices.
The $12,600 penalty collected funds NMED’s emergency response across the state.
During NMED’s inspection July 20, 2020, the Department cited MCT for the following alleged violations:
- Failure to perform hazardous waste determinations;
- Failure to properly establish and label hazardous waste accumulation areas within the facility;
- Failure to keep containers of hazardous waste closed and sealed;

LANL News:
A researcher at Los Alamos National Laboratory has detected two world-record lightning “megaflashes”. The longest-distance flash was detected in the southern United States on April 29, 2020 and spanned more than 477 miles from Mississippi to Texas.
The longest-duration lightning strike was detected over Uruguay on June 18, 2020 and lasted 17.1 seconds.
