COUNTY News:

Officials with the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities (DPU) will close a section of N.M. 4 between East Jemez Road and N.M. 502 (main hill) to all traffic.

The full road closure will be in effect for a 24-hour period beginning at 9 p.m. Friday Oct. 20 through 9 p.m. Saturday Oct. 21 to permit crews to safely install a large diameter water pipeline. East Jemez Road or the Truck Route will remain open at all times.

Friday evening and Saturday traffic traveling from Santa Fe to White Rock will be detoured through the townsite west on Trinity Drive, south on Diamond Drive across Omega Bridge, east on East Jemez Road and back to N.M. 4.

Sunday Oct. 22, one lane of traffic will be open in each direction while crews continue work on the project. There may be instances when traffic is completely stopped for short durations of time to move equipment safely.

The road closure is part of DPU’s project to drill a new drinking water well in Los Alamos Canyon that will supply water to the White Rock community. DPU’s contractor is installing the water line to connect the new well to an existing line under the eastbound lane of N.M. 4.

Dates selected for the highway closure were determined in coordination with other state and federal agencies to minimize the disruption to the majority of highway motorists. DPU staff does not anticipate any interruption of utility services while the new water line is being installed.

DPU officials suggest that motorists plan accordingly for the extra travel time. Direct questions to the DPU at 505.662.8333 or CustomerCare@lacnm.us.
