LAPS News:

Los Alamos Public Schools and New Mexico First will be hosting a series of input sessions about options for school start time.

Parents, community members, students and teachers are invited to attend one or both of the community-wide meetings; the first will be held in the High School Speech Theater on Oct. 24 and the second will take place at Piñon Elementary School on Oct. 25. Both of the community meetings begin at 5:30 p.m.  Light snacks and water will be provided.

The goal of these meetings is to briefly highlight the background report and thoroughly discuss the pros and cons of changing school start times. The background report was a collaborative effort with New Mexico First and LAPS.  The report includes the importance of sleep for children K-12, potential benefits and challenges of a later start time, and case studies about how other school districts faired after making such a change.

The upcoming community meetings present LAPS leaders, students, parents, educators and the community with a unique opportunity to work together and consider the potential benefits and challenges of changing school start times, including how to best ensure good health and life-long learning for all students and staff.

Since this type of change presents many challenges and warrants in-depth discussion, LAPS has invited a professional moderator, New Mexico First, to help facilitate the meetings. Each community meeting will include time for smaller breakout groups to delve into deeper conversations. A recorder will be stationed at each breakout group to ensure that every voice is heard and noted. Afterwards, the notes will be gathered and organized for further review by the School Board.

LAPS encourages all attendees to read the background report prior to attending the meeting in order to optimize group discussions. Please pre-register: click here for the Oct 24 Los Alamos meeting or here for the Oct 25 White Rock meeting.
