Highly Anticipated Annual Los Alamos County Triathlons Return With New Junior Triathlon

on July 14, 2017 - 2:57pm

Two long-standing Los Alamos County races—the 43rd Annual Los Alamos Triathlon and the 24th Annual Kids Triathlon—return Saturday, July 29 with the addition of a brand new for 2017 race, the 1st Annual Junior Triathlon.

The Los Alamos Triathlon is one of the oldest, continuously-running sprint triathlons that has a unique format of Bike-Swim-Run. It offers a challenging bike course with rolling hills, surrounded by beautiful mountain vistas. The bike leg is followed by a pool swim and ends with a run that heads north on Diamond Drive and ends at the Aquatic Center. This is a chip-timed event with cash and individual age group awards.

The Kids Triathlon is for ages three to 10 and is a non-competitive, fun and continuous race. Participants can use pushbikes, tricycles and training wheels on the bike course. Flotation devices and life vests are allowed in the pool. Every finisher receives a participant medals in this race, which is designed for fun and fitness.

New in 2017 is the Junior Triathlon for ages 10-16, which allows participants to transition to a competitive and timed event. This is an abbreviated Los Alamos Triathlon course with a 6.4 KM bike, 200-meter pool swim and 2.4 KM run. This event has medals for 1st through 3rd place in the age groups and is a great introduction to the competitive world of multi-sport events for youth.

Early registration is open through Tuesday, July 25. Beginning July 26, entrance fees will increase. Register online at or submit forms to the Parks, Recreation and Open Space Division’s Administrative offices at the Aquatic Center.
