COUNTY News:

During the regular Los Alamos County Council meeting Tuesday night, Councilor Chris Chandler read and presented a proclamation to the Friends of the Shelter:

WHEREAS: Friends of the Shelter is a local non-profit organization founded in 1999 who has worked with the Los Alamos County Animal Shelter and communities across Northern New Mexico to provide a variety of animal care services through volunteers and donations; they actively promote animals available for adoption and work with them on socialization skills so they can be more readily adopted; and

WHEREAS: Friends of the Shelter focuses on the adoption and care of animals in need of a home, which can include paying for medical care and spaying/neutering homeless animals, or assisting with emergency medical treatments not covered by the County’s local animal shelter, such as heart worm treatment, dental care or amputations - which can often be the difference between life or death for a beloved family pet or animal who could otherwise be placed in a loving home; and

WHEREAS: Friends of the Shelter has collaborated with Los Alamos County staff for over 15 years in their mutual efforts to provide the best environment for the animal community in Los Alamos, but their services extend beyond County borders; they provide grants to other New Mexico humane associations to assist them in reducing pet overpopulation, step in to save the lives of homeless pets, and transfer pets to other shelters in order to improve adoption rates; and

WHEREAS: During the recent Cajete Fire in the nearby Jemez Mountains, Friends of the Shelter helped transport evacuated animals and then worked with staff at our local shelter to care for the animals, and the Council would like to thank them for their assistance - it is just one example of many instances where Friends of the Shelter is making a visible difference in our community;

NOW, THEREFORE, on behalf of the Council of the Incorporated County of Los Alamos, we do extend this Special Recognition of gratitude to Friends of the Shelter, for their compassion and outreach through the use of volunteer staff time and monetary donations in order to provide the best care for animals in our community and neighboring communities. We applaud their efforts and wish Friends of the Shelter every success in their mission.
